English skills for education and beyond

A good grasp of English enables the student to do well in any subject that needs written answers. MG Tuition Services can provide support materials, homework if required for students from KS2 through to adult learners and are experienced in guiding pupils through exam practice for SATs and GCSEs.

English for Primary school students

Tutors follow the national curriculum and support literacy work taught in schools.  We help to identify any gaps in your child’s learning and support them with enhancing their literacy skills.  Extra English tuition provides valuable time for your child to grow and develop.  We build good relationships and establish a positive, supportive learning environment.  Carefully tailored sessions will include a focus on -

• Spelling
• Punctuation
• Grammar
• Reading comprehension

We revisit these topics to consolidate learning.

Providing opportunities for creative writing has been a great success. Finding a subject your child loves makes for a successful story writing experience. We endeavour to keep the sessions fun, interesting and engaging through a variety of activities.

We have experience of helping students with SATS exam preparation by providing past papers, marking them and giving feedback. 

Being able to express yourself confidently can really help KS2 students with the transition from primary to secondary school.

KS3 and GCSE English Tuition

GCSE English is important for all school students because it is a core subject and is also required by colleges and future employers.

We always listen to the student to help identify learning goals and specific needs. Regardless of ability, we help each student to make progress across a range of areas. We aim to build confidence by giving support, encouragement and praise.

In English Literature we explore set texts and poetry, for example: William Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' and Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol'. We take a structured approach and look at the plot, themes and characters. The tutors help students to understand a variety of language techniques and enhance their literary analytical skills. Our goal is for the student to become proactive and engaged in their learning.

Sessions in English Language include:-

• Writing short creative passages using a range of language techniques to create vivid and interesting pieces of writing,
• Practical writing skills including writing persuasive texts, as well as comparing and summarising texts.
• Looking at a variety of writing including fiction, non-fiction and poetry.

We provide past GCSE papers to work with, offer practical exam techniques, and give feedback on practice papers.

Adult Literacy

We offer a positive, encouraging and supportive learning environment.  At this stage, a collaborative approach is key.  We understand that English is fundamental to accessing a course or gaining employment.

We have experience in enhancing reading skills by providing strategies for dealing with unfamiliar words. Texts are chosen to be of real interest to the individual. Sessions include reading shorter texts to begin with and building up important skills such as identifying key words, skimming, scanning and identifying facts and opinions.

Approaches to improving spelling include looking at different components of words such as prefixes and suffixes. 

We also have experience of helping students prepare for important tests such as psychometric tests.

Online English Sessions

We have worked in a face to face capacity but are currently working online.  We have found that video conferencing on a laptop works best for delivering sessions.
